Out of the Ministerial Crisis
This wood engraving satirizes Dutch political turmoil, showing government ministers as grotesque figures engaged in absurd activity while a dignitary observes from the left. The composition recalls Daumier's political prints: caricature exaggerates facial features and body proportions to mock authority and incompetence. At lower center, a fallen figure lies prone—perhaps a casualty of ministerial mismanagement. The Dutch inscription mocks the spectacle: "The man with the stiff joints speaks." This print belongs to a long tradition of political satire descended from Hogarth and Gillray, where printmakers wielded sharp linework to expose corruption, stupidity, and moral failure in high office. Wood engraving allowed fine detail and mass circulation, making such prints powerful tools of public opinion in 19th-century Europe.
