Monk with Medical Instruments

Monk with Medical Instruments
This etching depicts a corpulent monk clutching surgical instruments and gesturing broadly—a satirical jab at clergy corruption and fraudulent medical practitioners. The figure's bloated frame, pointed hat, and prominent nose employ period caricature conventions to mock religious hypocrisy. Part of the Northern European print satire tradition descending from Hogarth and anticipating Gillray, such broadsheets circulated widely as cheap popular entertainment. The etching technique allowed sharp detail and biting line work essential to caricature's bite—visual ancestors to the comic strips and editorial cartoons that would emerge two centuries later.
