Acquittal of the Patriot Weekly *De Politieke Kruier*
· 1785

This Dutch etching celebrates a court victory for a patriotic newspaper, depicting the moment of legal vindication. A well-dressed couple stands before a classical gateway as allegorical figures above—including a winged woman and serpent—gesture triumphantly. A basket of papers and judicial instruments scatter at ground level. The print exemplifies the engraved political satire tradition of 18th-century Netherlands, where printmakers deployed classical iconography and domestic scenes to comment on current events and legal proceedings. Such sheets, distributed widely and read aloud in taverns, formed a crucial precursor to the serialized comics and editorial cartooning of later centuries, combining visual wit with topical urgency to shape public opinion.
