La Danse Semi-Séculaire des Barbières Bruxelloises
This etching mocks Brussels barbers and their wives celebrating a religious jubilee. The composition divides sharply: well-dressed gentlemen and women of means occupy the foreground in animated conversation and gesture, while above them hovers a semicircle of female figures—rendered in identical poses with heads labeled like scientific specimens—suggesting the women as interchangeable objects of ridicule. The print belongs to the tradition of social satire perfected by Gillray and Rowlandson, using exaggerated physiognomy and spatial arrangement to demean its targets by class and profession. The mechanical repetition of the female heads parodies both scientific taxonomy and classical compositional order, turning religious celebration into an occasion for satirizing working people and feminine presumption.
