Political Satire on the Statue of Alva

· 1571 (reproduced 1878)

Political Satire on the Statue of Alva
This wood engraving reproduces a sixteenth-century satirical print attacking Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alva, the Spanish military commander sent to suppress rebellion in the Netherlands. The composition follows the tradition of Northern European political prints: multiple narrative scenes and explanatory text panels surround a central tableau of Alva's statue being torn down by crowds. The print combines visual propaganda with dense typography, forcing viewers to read image and word together—a model inherited by later satirists from Hogarth through Daumier. The work demonstrates how printmaking became a tool of political resistance, circulating criticism beyond the reach of censors through multiple impressions. This reproductive engraving of 1878 itself testifies to the print's historical importance and its survival as political memory.
