John Law and Others Bear Their Debts Upon Their Shoulders
This Dutch engraving satirizes the collapse of John Law's Mississippi Company scheme, which ruined thousands of investors across Europe. Armored figures strain under enormous sacks of debt while cherubs below mock their predicament. The print exemplifies early 18th-century political satire—a tradition rooted in Northern European woodcuts and engravings that preceded Hogarth. Such works combined allegory, caricature, and densely printed text to address financial scandal and public folly for a literate urban audience. The engraver depicts Law's victims as classical warriors crushed by invisible economic forces, a visual metaphor that would echo through centuries of financial and political satire in prints, broadsides, and eventually comics.
