De strijd om de Gouden Stok (The Fight for the Golden Staff)
· 1608

This engraving depicts a violent quarrel among figures with exaggerated facial features and grotesque bodies, each wielding weapons or staffs. The Dutch text above describes the commotion as a fight over a golden staff, with chaos erupting among the assembled crowd. The work exemplifies early modern satirical printmaking, where crude physicality and caricatured physiognomy conveyed moral judgment and social ridicule. Such engravings circulated widely in 17th-century Netherlands, inheriting techniques from German Reformation broadsheets while establishing conventions that would dominate European print satire for centuries. The ethnic and class caricatures present reflect period prejudices; the grotesquerie functioned as visual mockery of perceived folly, greed, or vice among specific social groups or nationalities.
