The Shepherd's First View of the Flock: The Picnic
This wood engraving depicts three missionaries in formal dress observing a gathering of African people. The central figure towers over other forms in the composition. The print exemplifies the satirical tradition descending from Hogarth and Gillray: social commentary delivered through grotesque proportion and hierarchical composition. The satire targets missionary pretension—the formal dress and self-satisfied posture of the observers. Such images circulated widely in newspapers and satirical magazines, establishing visual conventions later inherited by early comic publications.
