The Schleswig-Holstein Question
This wood engraving depicts a military officer performing an absurd balancing act while clutching a document labeled with the disputed territories. Two crowned figures—representing European powers—flank him from behind. The cartoon satirizes the diplomatic chaos surrounding Schleswig-Holstein, a territorial dispute that convulsed European politics in the 1860s. The artist ridicules the precarious political maneuvering required to satisfy competing German, Danish, and Austrian claims. This print exemplifies the Northern European tradition of political satire inherited from earlier caricaturists like Rowlandson and Daumier. Such wood-engraved lampoons, distributed as single sheets, reached broad audiences and influenced the development of sequential political humor in newspapers and periodicals—ancestors of the modern comic strip.
