Industrial Time Clock (Stechuhr), Württembergische Uhrenfabrik Bürk
This German factory time clock combines practical timekeeping with decorative design. The Burk clock works as a Stechuhr—workers inserted cards into the mechanism to record arrival and departure times, a technology essential to industrial labor discipline. The wooden backing, black iron wheel housing, and numbered recording ring reflect the period's merger of efficiency and craft aesthetics. The small Burk clock face sits centrally, flanked by large iron wheels. Such devices emerged from 19th-century mechanization, enabling factories to monitor and control workers' hours with unprecedented precision. This specimen exemplifies the visual culture of industrial modernity—where technology became ornamentation, and surveillance became routine.
