On the Investigation of Shipworms by Prof. W. Vrolik
This Dutch wood engraving mocks a scientific inquiry into shipworm damage through physical comedy. The left panel shows a composed gentleman; the right depicts him in absurd distress, hat flying, after encountering the wood-boring pest. The satirist plays on the gap between academic dignity and practical disaster—a staple of 19th-century political and social caricature inherited from Gillray and Rowlandson. The print belongs to the European tradition of Bilderbogen picture-sheets and satirical broadsides that preceded modern comics, using exaggerated facial expressions, dynamic posture, and sequential narrative to puncture scientific pretension with humor rooted in class observation and physical humiliation.
