A. Sanches de Castro's silhouette caricature depicts a figure in profile wearing a broad-brimmed hat, clutching a rolled document or scroll. The stark black form against cream paper recalls the European tradition of political satire stretching from Hogarth and Gillray through Daumier and German Bilderbogen sheets. This Portuguese artist employs the silhouette—a printmaking economy favoring bold graphic impact over detail—to target a specific public figure through exaggerated posture and proportion. The method strips away naturalism to reveal character through distortion, a core principle of caricature as social commentary. Such work fed directly into early twentieth-century comic art, where simplified, expressive line-drawing and symbolic gestures became the visual language of sequential narrative and propaganda.
