Verklaaring van de Bovenstaande Afbeelding
This Dutch engraving ridicules members of a Rotterdam militia company by depicting them in absurd conversation with a demonic or satyr-like figure—a visual pun on their pretensions to civic virtue. The print exemplifies the Northern European tradition of group caricature, where specific societies or professions faced public mockery through satirical imagery and accompanying text. Such engravings circulated as broadsheets among urban audiences, blending visual wit with written commentary. This tradition of illustrated satire, rooted in the 16th and 17th centuries, informed later comic periodicals and eventually the sequential narrative format of modern comics. The exaggerated proportions and theatrical staging reveal early modern caricature's debt to both allegorical art and popular entertainment.
