Villeroy and the Elector of Bavaria Kneeling Before Louis XIV
· 1706

This engraved print depicts the submission of French and Bavarian leaders to Louis XIV during the War of Spanish Succession. The composition shows two figures in elaborate dress kneeling in supplication before the French king, surrounded by dense text labels identifying the participants and their actions. The work employs the conventions of early 18th-century political satire—engraving with explanatory inscriptions—to record and comment on dynastic power relations. The style descends from Northern European broadsheet traditions and anticipates later caricature's use of exaggeration and symbolic gesture to critique authority. Contemporary viewers would recognize the figures and their reduced status as commentary on French military and diplomatic dominance.
