The Struggle for the Golden Staff (De strijd om de Gouden Stok)
· 1608

This Dutch engraving depicts a chaotic scene of figures fighting over a long staff or rod, rendered in the tradition of Northern European satirical prints. Seven grotesquely caricatured men—wearing feathered hats and period dress—pull and push at the object while a dwarf or fool gestures wildly at lower right. The figures' exaggerated facial features and body proportions mock their subjects through physical distortion, a hallmark of early modern print satire. Created in the age of Bruegel and Cranach, this work exemplifies how printmakers used caricature and allegorical chaos to ridicule political or social rivals. The engraving's dense hatching and fine lines showcase technical precision in service of comedy and critique—a forerunner to the graphic satirists of later centuries.
