Een Parlementair Kegelspel (A Parliamentary Game of Bowls)
This Dutch wood engraving depicts a political crisis as a game of skittles, with parliament members as both players and pins. Bottles marked with party names stand on the alley; a figure at left prepares to bowl while spectators and clergy observe from the sidelines. The satire weaponizes sports imagery—common in 19th-century satirical prints—to ridicule parliamentary instability and the apparent trivial collision of political factions. The composition descends from Northern European traditions of political caricature established by Hogarth and developed through Daumier and German Bilderbogen, where public institutions and their representatives became targets of graphic mockery. The church architecture in the background suggests the religious and state tensions animating Dutch politics during this period.
