Frankrijk en Spanje beklagen hun verliezen (France and Spain Lament Their Losses)
This Dutch engraving depicts two crowned figures—personifications of France and Spain—mourning military defeats during the War of Spanish Succession. Both wear ornate royal garments covered with text explaining their grievances and losses. The print exemplifies the political cartoon tradition of early modern Europe, where allegorical figures and densely annotated bodies conveyed partisan argument to literate audiences. Text surrounds and covers the figures themselves, transforming human forms into carriers of propaganda and complaint. Such prints inherited conventions from Reformation broadsheets and prefigured the satirical print culture perfected by Hogarth, Gillray, and their successors—establishing visual argument as a popular medium for political speech and national sentiment.
