This Dutch wood engraving presents twenty-six scenes of student life, each keyed to a letter of the alphabet. From 'Anatomie' (dissection) through 'Zwerversacatie' (vagrant holiday), the print catalogs university pastimes with humor both gentle and pointed. Figures caricature types—the lazy student, the vain scholar, the befuddled professor—rendered in exaggerated form typical of 19th-century satirical prints. The work descends from the German Bilderbogen tradition and northern European caricature lineages stretching back through Rowlandson and Gillray. Such alphabet sheets, combining multiple scenes on a single plate, offered affordable mass entertainment while reinforcing social hierarchies through visual mockery of class, profession, and behavior. The format influenced later comic magazines and ultimately the layout and pacing of printed comics.
