Warsaw Types
· 1858

This wood engraving presents figures in 19th-century Warsaw, employing exaggerated facial features and physical characteristics typical of period satirical practice. The composition—a gentleman in top hat alongside other urban types—reflects the tradition of character studies found in European print satire from Hogarth through Daumier. The work uses sharp linework to define social types and class distinctions through costume and physiognomy, conventions inherited from 18th-century broadsheet tradition and popular in illustrated journalism. Such caricatures served contemporary audiences as commentary on urban life.
