De Groote Eclipsis in de Zon (The Great Eclipse of the Sun)
This Dutch engraving satirizes political and military events of the War of Spanish Succession through allegorical tableaux. A central scene depicts Queen Anne enthroned, flanked by courtiers and soldiers, while four corner panels show battles and political upheaval. The work exemplifies the Northern European print tradition—combining engraved narrative panels with extensive printed text below—that linked Reformation broadsheets to later comic illustration. Such political engravings circulated widely among educated audiences, embedding topical commentary in mythological and heraldic imagery. The dense composition and moral-political framework descend from Bruegel and anticipate the sequential, densely-packed storytelling of nineteenth-century satirists like Daumier and German Bilderbogen sheets, which in turn influenced early comic strips and graphic narrative.
