De Meerman van 't Noorder Gewest (The Merman of the Northern Region)
This Dutch engraving satirizes financial speculation during the early 18th-century stock bubble. A grotesque merman-Neptune figure commands a chaotic seascape crowded with nude and semi-draped bodies engaged in frenzied commercial activity. The print ridicules both the speculators themselves—depicted as foolish, bloated, and corporeal—and the absurdity of paper wealth detached from reality. The engraving's dense allegorical language and moralizing verse reflect the Northern European satirical tradition linking human folly to divine punishment. Such prints, circulating widely as cheap woodcuts and engravings, shaped public opinion on economic fraud and prefigured the political and social caricature tradition of Hogarth, Gillray, and later comic journalism.
