The French Cock Attacked by the Allies
This engraved satire depicts France as a rooster under assault by allied forces during the War of Spanish Succession. Birds of prey and aggressive animals—representing England, the Dutch, and other coalition powers—swarm the struggling French fowl, while soldiers clash in the background. The print combines allegorical animal symbolism with literal military imagery, a technique rooted in Northern European broadsheet tradition. Detailed inscriptions in Dutch and French explain the political stakes. Such single-sheet political engravings circulated widely among literate audiences, establishing conventions—animal surrogates, composite scenes, propagandistic verse—that would shape caricature and comic narrative for centuries. This work exemplifies how printmakers mobilized satire as a weapon in dynastic conflict, reaching beyond elite circles to shape public opinion through accessible visual argument.
