A Tavern Scene
This etching depicts a boisterous tavern gathering of working-class men, rendered with exaggerated physiognomy and caricature typical of popular print satire. The scene captures figures in animated conversation around a table laden with drink and provisions, while others gesture and interact in the background. The print exemplifies the etching tradition descending from Hogarth and Gillray—social observation through grotesque portraiture and comedic distortion. Such satirical prints, circulated as broadsheets and collected series, formed the visual language that would eventually evolve into comic strips.
