Four Scenes from Jack Sheppard

George Cruikshank's four vignettes — *The Castle*, *The Red Room*, *Door of the Red Room*, and *A Door between the Red Room & the Chapel* — depict the infamous thief and prison-breaker Jack Sheppard in various stages of confinement and escape. Executed in fine-line steel engraving, the panels show Sheppard crouched on floors, straining at massive iron-studded doors, and navigating the grim stonework of Newgate. Cruikshank, heir to Gillray and Rowlandson's tradition of sequential pictorial narrative, here pushes that tradition toward something recognizably proto-comic: discrete captioned panels advancing a single continuous story. This page-as-grid format, descended equally from the German Bilderbogen broadsheet, is one of the direct ancestors of the comic strip page — sequential images, consistent protagonist, compressed drama in a ruled frame.
