Street Encounter
Constantin Jiquidi, ilustrator · c. 1895

This ink sketch depicts two working-class men meeting on a city street, rendered in the sharp, economical line work characteristic of late 19th-century European illustration. The figure on the left carries a messenger's bag; both wear worn coats and hats, their facial features exaggerated through caricature—a visual language inherited from Rowlandson and Daumier. The artist captures a fleeting urban moment with social observation typical of the period's satirical prints. This drawing participates in a long tradition stretching from Hogarth through the German Bilderbogen sheets, where comic observation of ordinary life and character types provided entertainment and social commentary. The work demonstrates how exaggerated portraiture and situational humor in prints of this era directly preceded and shaped the visual strategies of early comic strips and sequential art.
