Student Life: A Dutch Academic Satire
· 1850

This etched broadsheet from a Leiden University student almanac mocks academic pretension through a series of vignettes: pompous professors, rowdy students, and scenes of dissipation. The composition mirrors the tradition of Gillray and Rowlandson: multiple episodes on one sheet narrate social folly without narrative sequence. The Dutch Bilderbogen format descends directly from Hogarth's sequential moral prints; both exploit grotesque physiognomy and exaggerated posture for comic effect. Student humor sheets like this anchored a popular visual-satiric tradition that fed into nineteenth-century newspaper comics and eventually the modern comic strip, where fragmented scenes and type-characters remain standard syntax.
