The Exodus of the Remonstrant Preachers

This engraved broadsheet depicts the forced departure of Remonstrant (Arminian) Protestant ministers from the Dutch Republic following the Synod of Dort in 1618–19. The composition shows a procession of clergy and their families loading carts and wagons, surrounded by soldiers and onlookers. The print employs the visual language of Northern European religious satire: exaggerated figures, chaotic staging, and symbolic details that conveyed political conflict to a broad public. Such engravings served as the primary medium for circulating commentary on religious and state power before newspapers. This tradition—combining moral narrative with social observation through sequential scenes—directly preceded the editorial cartooning and sequential art forms that would evolve into modern comics.
