Spotprent met ezel en wagen
A Belgian satirical print showing a uniformed figure seated on a cart pulled by a donkey, playing an accordion while waving a red flag. The composition stacks absurdist imagery—giant white flowers, palm fronds—in the manner of Daumier's mid-nineteenth-century political lithographs. Created as World War I ended, this hand-colored print belongs to the European tradition of political caricature inherited from Gillray and Rowlandson: exaggerated features and grotesque juxtapositions to mock military pretension or nationalist excess. Such imagery appeared in early twentieth-century comic supplements and picture-sheets before evolving into modern comic strips, demonstrating how satirical printmaking traditions became the visual language of sequential art.
