Samenspraak tussen een prinsgezinde en een patriot (Dialogue between a Royalist and a Patriot)

This Dutch woodcut presents a political argument between two figures representing opposing factions during the Dutch Patriot movement. The left panel shows a royalist supporter of the House of Orange; the right depicts a Patriot advocating for popular sovereignty and reform. Long verses below each figure articulate their positions in the constitutional crisis that gripped the Dutch Republic. The format—paired antagonists with explanatory text—derives from popular broadsheet traditions and moral-political dialogues circulating since the sixteenth century. Such prints functioned as accessible political propaganda, preceding the satirical traditions of Gillray and Rowlandson.
