Bucharest Barber

Jiquidi, Constantin · 1889

Bucharest Barber
This watercolor sketch depicts a bearded barber seated at his trade in late 19th-century Bucharest, rendered in the caricature tradition descending from Rowlandson and Daumier. The artist exaggerates facial features and posture to create character—a method fundamental to both satirical prints and early comic illustration. Working in fine watercolor and ink, the artist captures occupational dress and tools with specificity while employing distortion for comic or critical effect. Such character studies, whether targeting political figures or working-class subjects, established visual conventions that shaped the developing language of sequential art and comics.
