Opposition Middlemen at Yesterday's Root-Crop Harvest
This wood engraving satirizes Dutch political opposition parties as incompetent laborers bungling a harvest. Three suited figures awkwardly till soil while a fourth holds a sign reading "Fransche Pantser Plaats" (French Armor Place), suggesting foreign influence corrupts domestic politics. The scene ridicules the opposition's dysfunction through physical comedy—a tradition descending from Hogarth and Gillray through nineteenth-century German Bilderbogen sheets. The engraving's sharp lines and dense cross-hatching typify period political prints that deployed working-class imagery to mock elites.
