De zieltogende Anjouse Monarchie (The Dying Anjou Monarchy)
This etching depicts a banquet scene where aristocratic figures feast while a corpse lies neglected in the background—a political allegory of dynastic decline. The print satirizes the succession crisis following the death of Charles II, using the domestic interior as stage for commentary on European power struggles. The engraver employs fine crosshatching and detailed character work typical of early 18th-century Dutch satire, a tradition extending from Hogarth through the Gillray and Rowlandson prints that would follow. Such graphic broadsides circulated widely among educated readers, establishing the visual language of caricature, exaggeration, and symbolic narrative that later animated the comic strip and newspaper cartoon traditions.
