Political Satire on Baron de Stassart
This etching depicts a confrontation between a uniformed military officer and a crowd of civilians, with text labels identifying key figures in a Belgian political dispute. The composition follows 18th-century satirical print conventions—drawing from Gillray and Rowlandson—where exaggerated physiognomy and theatrical gesturing expose public figures to ridicule. The crowd carries signs reading "Vive le denomination" and "Prayers à la demeure de." The print belongs to the Northern European tradition of political commentary through engraving. This form of visual polemic, combining text and image to mobilize public opinion, directly preceded the sequential narrative and political cartooning of later 19th-century newspapers and popular prints.
