Homage of the Spanish to Charles III
· 1706

This copper engraving depicts Spanish nobles and clergy rendering formal obeisance to Charles III during the War of Spanish Succession. The composition—with ranks of figures arranged in theatrical perspective—descends from Renaissance court ceremonial imagery, yet the crowded, hierarchical staging anticipates the political satire tradition of Hogarth and Gillray. Allegorical roundels in the corners invoke divine sanction. The print exploits engraving's capacity for fine detail and architectural precision to document dynastic protocol, while the dense Latin text below anchors the image in legal and historical argument. Such propagandistic engravings, distributed across Europe, functioned as visual journalism, establishing conventions of political portraiture and crowd scenes that would evolve into the narrative sequences of nineteenth-century satirical prints and ultimately modern comic art.
