De lachende Aesopus bij het koolmaal bij het afscheid van de Actieapen
This Dutch engraving depicts a mythological scene populated by monkeys and human figures in a landscape of rivers and forests. The composition mixes classical allegory with social commentary through animal substitution—a standard practice in early 18th-century political prints. Rendered in fine-line etching with extensive Dutch verse below, the print belongs to the Bilderbogen tradition of satirical broadsheets that used dense narrative scenes and explanatory text to target financial schemes, class pretension, or public figures. The anthropomorphized apes reference both Aesop's fables and the South Sea Bubble financial crisis that swept Europe. Such prints, combining myth and caricature, form a direct ancestor to modern sequential art and the comic broadside tradition.
