Het Lot des Oorlogs (The Fate of War)
This Dutch broadside prints a political poem in multiple columns, accompanied by decorative typographic ornaments—a format descended from Renaissance newssheets and the German Bilderbogen tradition. The layout exemplifies early-18th-century print satire's marriage of verse and visual framing, where typography itself becomes graphic design. Published during the War of Spanish Succession, the work participates in a burgeoning culture of political commentary through printed sheets distributed to the literate public. The ornamental borders and columnar text anticipate the visual density of later caricature traditions from Hogarth onward, where word and image collaborate to target political figures and events. This mode of illustrated polemic—cheap, portable, and reproducible—established conventions that would evolve into the sequential narrative panels of modern comics.
