A Large Balloon Flies Over a Town Crowded with People
· 1810

James Gillray's hand-colored etching shows a globe-shaped hot-air balloon — decorated as a world map and crowned with flames — ascending over what appears to be an English city of Gothic spires and domed buildings. Riding the gondola is a figure in ecclesiastical vestments and papal tiara, arms spread wide, scattering printed documents or indulgences downward onto a chaotic mob below: top-hatted gentlemen, women, soldiers, and animals tumbling together in exaggerated, rubbery distortion. The crowd's faces carry the broad ethnic and class caricature standard to Regency satirical print — grotesque noses, slack jaws, goggling eyes — conventions that encoded social hierarchy and anti-Catholic prejudice for Georgian audiences who consumed such prints as entertainment and political commentary. Gillray's acid-bitten line and vivid aquatint wash descend directly from Hogarth's narrative series and pass forward to Töpffer's sequential panels and ultimately the comic book page.
