Fantasie-compositie betrekking over de Frans-Duitse oorlog
· 1876

This etching presents three cloaked figures in a snow-laden forest, their forms wrapped in heavy garments that obscure individual identity. The composition references the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71), transforming historical conflict into allegorical fantasy. The artist employs the etcher's needle to build dense cross-hatching that suggests both winter's desolation and moral ambiguity. The work belongs to a tradition of political satire stretching from Hogarth through Daumier—using exaggeration, symbolic costume, and grotesque figure to comment on state power and warfare.
