Dutch Political Satire on the Netherlands Question, 1864

This wood-engraved Dutch satirical print depicts a confrontation between a portly Dutch figure (left) representing the Netherlands, and a tall military officer embodying Prussian or French imperial authority. The scene references contemporary political tensions over Dutch sovereignty and territorial disputes. The florid Dutch text and exaggerated physiognomies employ caricature conventions inherited from Gillray and Rowlandson. Such prints were staples of 19th-century political commentary, distributed as single sheets to a reading public hungry for visual satire. This tradition of grotesque portraiture and emblematic costume directly preceded the illustrated periodicals and eventually comic strips that would dominate popular visual culture.
