Allegorical Scene of Oppression by the Stadhouder and Prussia
· September 1787

This engraved allegory depicts political turmoil during the Dutch patriot crisis of 1787. Monumental columns frame a chaotic scene where figures representing the common people suffer under tyranny, while winged demons and armed oppressors dominate the composition. The Latin inscription—"Non, si male nunc et olim sic erit"—promises that this suffering will not last forever. The print belongs to the Northern European tradition of political satire and moral allegory, where complex social grievances are rendered through symbolic imagery rather than caricature. Such prints circulated as instruments of political argument, allowing artists to critique authority through classical reference and elaborate scene-setting—precursors to the more direct caricature and sequential narrative that would define later comic media.
