Satire on the 1844 Voluntary 3% State Loan
· 1844

This Dutch wood-engraved broadsheet satirizes the government's push for voluntary subscription to a state loan. The page presents six numbered scenes of ordinary citizens—beggars, laborers, market women, soldiers—confronted with official pressure to contribute money they cannot spare. The scenes mock the contradiction between "voluntary" solicitation and actual coercion. The print descends from the tradition of popular political satire established by Hogarth and Gillray, using sequential narrative and social caricature to expose state hypocrisy. Such picture-sheets were mass-produced for working-class audiences who recognized themselves in these figures, turning personal hardship into collective commentary on power.
