Satire on the Mississippi Company
This engraving depicts the collapse of John Law's Mississippi Company, the financial scheme centered on French colonial ventures in Louisiana. A crowded street scene shows speculators and investors in chaos—some celebrating, others fighting or despairing as the bubble bursts. The print employs the visual language of Northern European satirical engraving: dense composition, allegorical figures, and sharp social observation inherited from Hogarth's moral narratives. The satirist captures greed and financial folly through specific character types and exaggerated gestures. This tradition of using prints to ridicule financial excess, political corruption, and social pretension directly precedes the sequential narrative humor of 18th-century picture-sheets and eventually the comics medium itself.
