Dans un Boudoir
This hand-colored pochoir print depicts an orange vanity table laden with luxury goods—perfume bottle, beaded necklace, powder puff—set upon patterned fabrics. The scene satirizes postwar consumer excess and feminine leisure through exaggerated ornament: the table's massive bronze claw feet and geometric Art Deco styling mock the period's appetite for costly furnishings. Published in a luxury fashion journal, the image participates in a centuries-old print tradition of social mockery traceable to Hogarth and Gillray, wherein everyday habits become subjects of visual critique. The decorative flatness and bold color planes echo the comic sheets and satirical imagery that would feed directly into early twentieth-century comic strips, transforming domestic interiors into stages for class and gender commentary.
