La Citroën et les Sports: Le Golf
· 1922

This hand-colored pochoir print advertises the Citroën 10 HP Torpédo-Luxe automobile by associating it with leisure and modern sport. The composition—a well-dressed family pausing beside their vehicle during a golf outing—exemplifies 1920s consumer culture targeting the aspirational middle class. The elegant figures, rendered in the Art Deco style prevalent in French fashion magazines, suggest that automobile ownership enables refined recreation. The print descends from 18th- and 19th-century commercial imagery and satirical prints that used social scenes to comment on class aspiration and consumption. Here, however, satire yields to marketing: the scene flatters rather than mocks its audience, reflecting the emerging power of commercial illustration to shape consumer desire through aspirational lifestyle imagery rather than critical caricature.
