The Departing Prophet's Mantle

· 1865

The Departing Prophet's Mantle
This Dutch wood engraving satirizes succession politics within the Anti-Revolutionary Party. A figure on horseback, representing departing leadership, tosses a prophetic mantle upward while two men below—one rowing a boat—scramble to catch it. The print employs the exaggerated body language and caricature conventions of European political printmaking, descended from Gillray and Daumier. Such satirical broadsides were distributed widely in Dutch newspapers and as standalone sheets, combining sharp visual wit with partisan commentary. The cartoonist mocks the undignified competition for power and questions the legitimacy of succession, using allegorical props and grotesque physiognomy to ridicule the contenders. This tradition of pictorial satire fed directly into modern comic strips and editorial cartooning.
