Three Contemporary Themes Used to Create Political Satire

Published by T. McLean, London, this etching by William Heath — 'Paul Pry,' one of the most prolific caricaturists of the Regency and early Victorian period — arranges three satirical vignettes on a single sheet, a format directly ancestral to the comic strip. The upper panel contrasts 'The Siamese Youths' (the conjoined twins Chang and Eng, then a London sensation) with 'Our Own Youths,' two young men sharing a label reading 'PLACE' — political patronage, the era's chronic corruption. The lower panels lampoon Church Affairs and a street hawker advertising this very periodical, *The Looking Glass*. Heath's line is crisp copperplate work, economical and pointed. This sheet sits squarely in the Gillray–Rowlandson tradition from which sequential comic art directly descends.
