Spotprent op de adelborst Berghuis

Spotprent op de adelborst Berghuis
This Dutch satirical engraving depicts a chaotic domestic scene where figures in period dress react to a large cannon or military apparatus exploding indoors. The print attacks Berghuis, a naval cadet, through visual ridicule of military incompetence and domestic disorder. Rendered in the tradition of Northern European political prints, it employs exaggerated figures and violent action to mock its subject. The accompanying Dutch verse amplifies the visual satire with wordplay and accusations of cowardice. Such broadsheets—combining image and text to lampoon public figures—were precursors to modern comics. This tradition, established by Hogarth and refined by artists across Europe, relied on caricature, slapstick, and moral judgment to engage popular audiences in political critique.
