Dutch Cabinet Crisis (Uit de Ministeriele Krisis)
This wood engraving satirizes a Dutch ministerial crisis through allegorical figures. Britannia—the seated female personification of Dutch national interest—addresses a tall politician while attendants and junior officials cluster nearby, their anxious faces betraying the stakes of political maneuvering. The artist employs the visual vocabulary of mid-19th-century political caricature inherited from Gillray and Daumier: exaggerated physiognomies, symbolic poses, and architectural settings that elevate mundane parliamentary conflict to mythic significance. The Dutch text beneath reports the public's sardonic view of ministerial promises. This print exemplifies how satirical prints functioned as political commentary before mass-circulation newspapers, using grotesque portraiture and allegory to mock authority while engaging viewers in topical debate.
