Vignettes
This wood-engraved sheet presents five narrative vignettes arranged on a single page—a format descended from 18th-century satirical broadsheets and German Bilderbogen picture-sheets. Each scene depicts domestic or social situations rendered in sharp, expressive line work characteristic of wood engraving's bold contrasts. The compositions show everyday figures—servants, gentlemen, women—in various predicaments or activities, typical of the period's humor based on class observation and physical comedy. Like the caricature tradition of Hogarth and Rowlandson, these vignettes rely on exaggerated gesture and circumstantial detail for comic effect. The sequential arrangement of small scenes on a single plate prefigures the panel-based structure that would become fundamental to comic strips and comic books, establishing a visual grammar for comics' development from 19th-century popular print culture.
