The Train at This Moment
De Pauw, René · 1918

This hand-colored lithograph depicts three well-dressed gentlemen at a railway station, two clutching cornucopias overflowing with ammunition and weapons marked with red poppies—symbols of fallen soldiers. A third figure, rendered with exaggerated features typical of period caricature, gestures toward departing trains and a distant fortress. The French caption mocks how politicians present war materiel as gifts while soldiers suffer. Created during World War I's final year, this print continues the 19th-century European tradition of political satire—from Gillray through Daumier—using caricature and grotesque exaggeration to critique leadership. The lithographic medium allowed rapid production for mass circulation, a precursor to modern editorial cartooning and sequential art's satirical inheritance.
